Selected restaurants at three Kanagawa shopping complexes will begin distributing free containers for leftover food from October 30, with each participating restaurant receiving ten containers. The locations are Shonan T-SITE, LaLaport Ebina and LaLaport Shonan Hiratsuka; only some restaurants and suitable menus are covered.
The initiative uses mottECO, a name for the Environment Ministry-backed practice of taking restaurant leftovers home at the diner’s own responsibility. The prefecture says customers should first order an amount they can finish and listen to the restaurant’s instructions if food remains.
Distribution starts in stages and ends at each restaurant when its containers run out. The prefecture says the containers can be reused at home. It aims eventually to involve around 100 restaurants, including individual establishments outside the shopping complexes as preparations are completed.
