A November 1–30 fair at Umiterasu Nadachi in Joetsu will feature genge, a deep-sea fish landed at Nadachi fishing port. Operator-group company Gokei announced the plans on October 28. Restaurant offerings include tempura, a rice dish and ramen made with sake lees; the first-floor market will sell fresh and processed fish.

The restaurant hours listed are 11 a.m.–3 p.m. and 5–9 p.m., with last orders 30 minutes before closing. Market hours are 9 a.m.–6 p.m. The new rice dish uses Joetsu rice and is eaten first as served, then with broth added. Product availability and prices should be checked with the venue.

Local perspective

Offering the same local catch as a prepared meal and a market product lets visitors connect a harbour ingredient with different ways of eating it. The Joetsu rice adds a second local production link. The range of formats explains the food experience, without proving higher fishing incomes or a health benefit.
