Daimaru Shimonoseki will expand its store-history exhibition from October 31 through August 31, 2027, its operator announced on October 28. The seventh-floor event space offers free entry from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the store is closed on January 1 and 2. Its planned trading closure is August 31, 2027.

The second display includes about 100 photographic panels and local newspaper material on events since 2000. It also traces changes around Shimonoseki Station. The store first opened in 1950 and moved to the Sea Mall site in 1977, connecting the exhibition with the development of the station district.

Local perspective

A store’s moves and photographs offer a route into the history of an ordinary shopping district, beyond a city’s famous sights. Showing that material in the building before closure creates a specific opportunity to compare commercial space across time. It does not establish what will replace the store or predict the district’s economic future.
