A high-school forestry club in Gunma has won a national education minister’s award for a student-led project that turns neglected bamboo groves into a local resource, the prefecture announced on October 22. The recipient is the forestry science club at 群馬県立利根実業高等学校.
Students maintain abandoned bamboo stands, make charcoal from bamboo and put bamboo shoots to use, working with local businesses. The award recognised the system they have built to keep resources and value circulating locally.
The 3R awards recognise sustained work towards a circular economy through reducing waste, reusing materials and recycling. The presentation ceremony is scheduled for October 26 in Tokyo.
