Thirty-seven sixth-graders at Miyauchi Elementary School in Nanyo will take part in an engineering and disaster-preparedness lesson on October 30, according to an October 23 announcement from Yamagata’s Okitama administration.

The scheduled session runs from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the school’s gym and grounds. Topics include how rainfall can cause slopes to fail, the structure of stone bridges, Yamagata’s earthquakes and active faults, and a drone-flight simulator experience. It is a school lesson for the specified pupils, rather than an open public workshop.

The prefecture has supported the engineers’ association’s visiting lessons since fiscal 2017. Its announcement places the activity in the context of construction’s role in maintaining infrastructure, responding to disasters and clearing winter snow, and efforts to interest a future generation in that work. The organisers caution that illness-related conditions could cause cancellation.
