Three dishes developed from students’ ideas are scheduled to be served at Nishikagura elementary and junior high schools in Asahikawa at the end of October, according to the city’s school lunch project page. An October 22 update added a video of the project’s second lesson.
During that lesson on July 16, junior high students worked in six mixed-year teams to prepare a pork dish and taste the proposed menu. The city’s food ambassador developed the dishes using their suggestions, including local tomatoes. The project uses school meals as a practical way for children to learn about Asahikawa’s farming and food. It involves Nishikagura Junior High School in the first part of the school year and fifth graders at Kaguraoka Elementary School in the second.
