Shimane Art Museum’s seventh Hokusai collection display opened on October 28 and runs through November 30, the prefecture announced on October 26. Around 40 works are listed, including The Great Wave off Kanagawa, a turtle print and a late-life tiger painting. The display is in the second-floor Hokusai room.

The museum draws its rotations from a Hokusai collection of about 1,600 holdings spanning colour prints, privately issued prints, illustrated books and paintings. Hours are 10 a.m.–6:30 p.m., with entry to the galleries until 6 p.m. Tuesdays are closed except November 3. General admission to the collection exhibition is 400 yen; university students pay 260 yen and elementary, junior-high and high-school students enter free.

Local perspective

Seeing the familiar wave alongside a small-format print and a painting offers a route beyond recognising one famous image. For visitors interested in Japanese art, the collection’s range can turn a single-work stop into a comparison of formats and stages of an artist’s career. That interpretive possibility does not establish how many tourists will travel to the region.
