Saitama Prefecture will honour Jun Kaneko, an Iwatsuki doll maker, at its traditional-handicraft industry awards ceremony on October 27. The ceremony is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. at the governor’s official residence, with the recipient’s work displayed at the venue.
The award recognises long service to craft-producing communities, including passing on and improving skills, training successors and supporting the industry. Its eligibility criteria include being at least 60 and having played a leading role in such work for at least 30 years.
Kaneko is the sole recipient listed for fiscal 2026, bringing the total number of recipients to 417. The announcement is a notice of an awards ceremony, not an invitation to a public workshop or an open exhibition.
Local perspective
The criteria place continuity of skills and organisation alongside the finished craft object. That gives Japan enthusiasts a useful lens for understanding a production community: sustaining it involves teaching successors and collective industry work, as well as making dolls. The award is evidence of what the prefecture chooses to recognise, however, not a measurement of the industry’s financial health or proof that a succession problem has been solved.
