Three Kanagawa prefectural high schools have been selected as national education-reform pilot hubs after a second application. The prefecture announced on October 23 that Chuo Agricultural, Zama and Kawasaki high schools had all been accepted following their rejection in June and reapplication in September.
The national programme pairs changes to teaching with improvements to the environment needed to deliver them, with the aim of spreading the resulting experience across the region. Chuo Agricultural’s plan focuses on industrial education, Zama’s on inquiry in science and mathematics, and Kawasaki’s on inclusive learning linked with part-time high schools across the prefecture.
The prefecture’s table lists funding ceilings of 3.71 billion yen, 1.61 billion yen and 720 million yen respectively. These are the stated upper limits. The board of education says it will move towards implementation and plans to draw up a wider prefectural high-school reform action plan during the current fiscal year.
