A free afternoon of Awa puppet theatre is scheduled in Tokushima on November 8, combining performances, a curator’s talk and a display of puppets. Tokushima City’s October 26 release on PR TIMES announces the 22nd Tenguhisa festival at Kokufu Community Center.
The programme runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. A talk by the Tenguhisa museum’s curator will address writer Chiyo Uno’s visit to Tenguhisa. The performance programme includes members of Kokufu Elementary School’s puppet-theatre club and local troupe Cosmos-za, followed by a production involving Yorii-za, a narrator and a shamisen player.
Puppets by Tenguhisa, provided by Yorii-za, will be exhibited. The city advises visitors to use public transport where possible because parking is limited. The release does not promise interpretation in other languages.
Local perspective
For a visitor interested in Japanese performance traditions, the combination of displayed puppets, live theatre and a curator’s talk offers more than a stage programme alone. It places the objects and their maker alongside their use in performance, while the school club’s participation makes intergenerational activity visible. That is a specific cultural reason to consider the event; it does not establish foreign-language accessibility or prove increased inbound demand.
