Yamagata is seeking prefectural residents, groups and businesses willing to cut and use obstructive trees in managed river areas in Nagai, Shirataka, Iide and Oguni. Applications run from November 9 until 5 p.m. on November 20, according to the prefecture’s current notice.

This is an approval-based scheme, not permission for visitors to collect timber at will. Applicants must follow the handling rules and subsidy guidelines, and the regional river office screens and certifies users. The notice says a contribution towards costs depends on tree density for approved work. It does not offer a universal payment or remove the need to check the detailed work conditions.

Local perspective

Requiring users to cut the material themselves links resource use to the labour of river maintenance. That makes eligibility and approval central to the scheme’s economic meaning: the wood is not simply a freely available commodity for anyone passing through. The announcement identifies a possible local-use channel, but gives no basis for estimating profitability, employment or the amount of timber ultimately used.
