Yamada Town in Iwate will hold its Nigiwai Market around the Machinaka Exchange Center on November 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Its October 28 announcement lists direct sales of new-season rice, science shows and performances by 11 groups.
The centre, established after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, marks its tenth anniversary. Iwate University’s engineering outreach team plans science shows at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Temporary parking is available opposite Yamada Central Park, but the town warns of crowding. A separate neighbouring shop activity begins at 9 a.m.; it is not the festival’s main opening time.
Local perspective
Combining farm sales, university outreach and local performers makes this a useful place to see several kinds of community work together. The centre’s anniversary gives that gathering a longer history than a one-day market alone. Visitors can learn about those relationships, but the programme does not measure reconstruction outcomes or prove a rise in local incomes.
