Visitors to Hikone can ride a free trial bus on an expanded route around the castle through November 15. Shiga’s October 23 announcement describes a roughly 3-kilometre loop from Hikone Station’s west side via Irohamatsu, the castle frontage and Otemae, replacing last year’s roughly 1.5-kilometre return route.
General service began on October 14. Eight trips a day are scheduled between the 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. hours, with nine passenger places and priority for reservations through Locobus. There is no service on November 3 or 8, and bad weather may also cancel trips without replacements.
The trial uses Level 2 automation with a driver aboard; Level 4 operation remains a future goal. Shiga links the work to its March 2026 regional transport plan and the growing shortage of bus drivers, testing technology alongside ways to encourage use of public transport.
