A woman in her 60s in Kofu transferred a total of ¥56.15 million after callers claimed that she was under investigation, Yamanashi Prefectural Police said in their October 21 bulletin.

The account begins with an August 11 call from someone posing as a Japan Post employee. The woman was then put in contact with a person claiming to be a Metropolitan Police Department officer. Through calls and a messaging app’s voice-call function, she was told that a financial investigation was needed to prove her innocence. Police say she made two transfers to a specified account by October 5.

The callers later sought another ¥10 million, described as bail. She prepared the money, but contacted police after communications stopped. The bulletin reports the ¥56.15 million loss; it does not say the additional amount was paid.

A separate prefectural police guide explains that this category of fraud can involve building trust without meeting the victim and directing money to a specified account. The guide also covers approaches through social-media messages and communication apps, including people posing as police.
