Niigata police arrested a teenager on October 23 on suspicion of attempted fraud involving a request for a Nagaoka woman to send ¥3 million in cash, Niigata Keizai Shimbun reported on October 25. The report says the woman contacted police and the money was not obtained.
According to the police account in the report, calls made between around October 21 and 23 impersonated the woman’s son and a lawyer. They allegedly claimed that unpaid tax on investment profits required a cash payment, to be sent by delivery service to an apartment building in Tokyo.
Police suspect the teenager acted with unidentified others. The reported method combined impersonation of a relative with a request to move cash outside Niigata; the arrest concerns an alleged attempt, and the report does not establish guilt.
