JR Matsuyama Station’s west-side plaza will host a woodworking market on November 14, with around 15 stalls planned between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Matsuyama announced the event on October 22 as the third instalment of its Tsunagu Ekimachi project.
The programme includes wooden goods, workshops on wood and forests, and activities such as making chopsticks or wooden castanets. Other stalls are set to offer flowers, accessories, interior items and light food. Participants can also write messages on leaf-shaped cards for the project’s symbolic station tree.
The city began the project in September to bring activity to the JR station area through recurring events. It also aims to encourage movement between that area and Matsuyama City Station, where a plaza was completed at the end of September. These are two distinct station areas; the November market venue is the plaza at JR Matsuyama Station’s west exit.
Local perspective
Our interpretation is that hands-on activities give this station-area project a reason for people to pause, rather than using the plaza solely to pass through. Chopstick and castanet making offer a specific way to engage with wood, alongside opportunities to browse small sellers. For travellers interested in everyday craft, that combination could make a station stop more than a transport connection. Whether it actually leads people to visit the separate Matsuyama City Station area or spend more locally remains an open question; the announcement describes an aim, not a measured result.
