Yamagata makers have until October 29 to apply for a one-week sales trial at a Christmas market in Hanover, Germany. The prefecture’s updated notice sets two deadlines that day: 5 p.m. for the emailed application and 11:59 p.m. for registration with JETRO’s Japan Street service.
The planned selling period is December 14–20. Around ten businesses with a manufacturing or similar operating base in Yamagata are sought; wholesalers and retailers are excluded. Complete application emails are considered in order of receipt.
German- and English-speaking staff will explain product stories, sell items and survey visitors, with results returned to participating businesses. The project is intended to help develop overseas sales channels for local crafts and design goods. Participation carries transport, customs, tax and return-shipping costs; the official guidelines specify the fixed charges. Cosmetics, hygiene products and blades are among the excluded goods.
Local perspective
Our assessment is that the feedback mechanism is the more useful part of this trial for small producers: sales results and visitor questionnaires can help them test how a product and its explanation are received before deciding on further overseas activity. The bilingual staff also give the trial a way to present product stories rather than relying on display alone. This is a limited market test, not evidence that German demand is already established. Makers still need to weigh the stated transport and tax costs against what they hope to learn.
