Digital Entertainment Asset has announced an Oita-area trial that asks app users to photograph utility poles, scheduled for October 31–November 29. Its October 28 release lists about 20,000 poles across 11 Oita municipalities and part of Buzen in neighbouring Fukuoka. The period may change or end early depending on photo collection.
The partners include NTT West and NTT Field Techno. The trial examines whether collected photographs can assist infrastructure inspection work. Photography hours are 6:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.; participation requires app registration and selection of the relevant Oita season. The announcement describes an experiment, not completed evidence that public photography can replace professional inspection.
Local perspective
Treating a familiar street object as something to document can make the maintenance behind a townscape more visible. For Japan enthusiasts interested in everyday infrastructure, the trial connects walking with the work required to keep local systems functioning. Its value still depends on usable photographs and the partners’ assessment; participation alone cannot demonstrate lower maintenance costs.
