Tono Municipal Museum in Iwate will present an exhibition on divination and ritual charms from November 1 to January 11, 2027. Tourism Management Board Tono announced the programme on October 22. Displays include materials from across Iwate, such as a physiognomy manual and written charms.
The exhibition connects these objects with practices used to anticipate harvests, weather and personal fortunes. The museum also introduces local life and culture through exhibits centred on The Legends of Tono. Visitors should check the closure calendar: the notice lists November 24–27 and December 28–January 4 among its closures, in addition to regular closing rules.
Local perspective
Viewing charms beside records of agricultural and everyday concerns offers an interpretive route into folklore, rather than treating the objects simply as supernatural curiosities. That is a concrete point of interest for visitors seeking the social setting of Tono stories. The exhibition describes historical belief and practice; it does not establish that divination works or that foreign-language interpretation will be available.
