Four business partnerships have started work through Aomori Prefecture’s Blue Ocean open-innovation programme, operator eiicon announced on October 30. Partner selection took place October 23, followed by visits to host businesses on October 28 and a joint workshop in Aomori City on October 29. This is a report of selection and initial work, rather than a new call for applications.

The projects concern apple-residue materials, other local natural materials, new experiences around sake, and pet products using seafood-processing residues. The programme pairs four prefectural businesses with four outside partners. Incubation support is scheduled from November, with a results presentation planned for February 24, 2027; the timetable may change. The material-use and market-development ideas remain projects under examination.

Local perspective

Using residues as development inputs asks whether value can be retained beyond the original food product. Pairing resource-owning businesses with outside partners provides a concrete route to test that question, rather than relying on regional branding alone. Selection is an early step: commercial demand, production feasibility and returns to producers still need evidence from the projects.
