Gunma’s seasonally adjusted industrial production index rose 14.7% from July to 122.6 in August, according to figures released by the prefecture on October 26. The prefecture attributed the increase to gains in sectors including chemicals and electrical machinery, describing the result as the first monthly rise in two months.

The shipment index increased 1.6% to 101.9, while inventories fell 2.8% to 168.1. These are month-to-month changes in seasonally adjusted indices, not growth rates for the same month a year earlier.

The survey tracks production, shipments and inventories at mining and manufacturing establishments to provide a picture of industrial activity. The publication concerns August activity; October 26 is the release date. The prefecture links to its statistical information system for detailed results.

Local perspective

In our assessment, the difference between the production and shipment changes is a reason to read the three measures together. A 14.7% production rise is a stronger movement than the 1.6% shipment increase, so the output headline alone cannot establish a comparable expansion in goods leaving factories. For readers following Gunma’s industrial economy, the release offers evidence of a monthly rebound in activity, but not proof of lasting demand growth, higher profits or additional jobs. Those conclusions would require evidence beyond this month’s indices.
