Meitetsu and Mitsubishi Electric plan a Seto Line trial of a radio-based train-protection system from January 20 to early March 2027. Meitetsu announced the schedule on October 26. The test will examine whether the proposed system works with the railway’s operating pattern before any wider introduction is considered.
A central question is whether trains fitted with the new system can run alongside trains using the existing M-type automatic train stop system. The proposed radio system continuously sends existing signal information to trains. The companies describe it as groundwork for possible future automated operation; this trial announcement is not the start of driverless passenger services.
Local perspective
Testing mixed operation makes the transition process itself an industrial issue: equipment need not be treated only as an all-at-once replacement question. If the approach proves practical, gradual installation could change how a fleet upgrade is organised. That is a conditional interpretation of the test design, not evidence of proven safety gains, cost savings, a changed passenger timetable or an approved driverless-service launch.
