Hokuetsu Express will test four electrically assisted rental bicycles from October 31 to November 30, its October 29 notice says. Rental is based at the tourism information office beside Matsudai Station, with advance telephone or fax reservations required. Four hours cost 2,500 yen, eight hours 4,000 yen and two days 6,000 yen, including tax. Rental hours are 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
Only the trial’s Hokuchari bicycles may be carried on board without packing, and only between Tokamachi and Matsudai on the specified trains within the 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. window. Other bicycles must be dismantled or folded and bagged. Return is possible at the original office or Tokamachi Station, but the return point must be chosen in advance. The operator aims for regular operation from April 2027, after this cycle-train trial.
Local perspective
A prearranged one-way return can make a rail-and-cycle itinerary more flexible than a simple out-and-back rental. Yet the narrower train window matters more than the longer rental hours when planning the connection. The four-bike trial tests that combination on a limited section; it is not permission to bring an unpacked personal bicycle onto any train.
ほくほく線でレンタサイクル実証、持込区間・時間を限定
北越急行の10月29日資料によると、電動アシスト自転車4台の「ほくチャリ」を10月31日～11月30日に試験導入する。まつだい駅隣接の観光案内所で電話またはFAXの事前予約が必要。税込で4時間2,500円、8時間4,000円、2日6,000円。貸出時間は9～17時だが、そのまま列車に持ち込めるのは指定列車・十日町～まつだい間の9時30分～15時30分に限る。他の自転車は解体または折り畳んで袋に収納する必要がある。返却は元の案内所か十日町駅で、事前に場所を指定する。2027年4月の本格運用を目指す実証である。
独自考察
返却地点を事前に選べる仕組みは、借りた場所に必ず戻る場合より鉄道と自転車の旅程を組みやすくする。一方、列車との接続には長い貸出時間ではなく短い持込時間帯を使って計画する必要がある。4台で限定区間の組合せを試すもので、私物自転車を袋なしでどの列車にも持ち込める許可ではない。
