Tokushima City’s October 21 announcement sets a free Awa puppet-theatre performance at the Inukai rural stage for November 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. The stage is in a shrine precinct in Hata. The programme will go ahead in rain, and visitors may enter or leave partway through.

Puppetry will be followed by a local preservation society’s fusuma-screen performance, using 132 panels to create 42 scenes. The city describes the stage as a nationally designated important tangible folk cultural property. Its survival reflects preservation work on a kind of village venue once built across Tokushima for puppet performances.

Local perspective

Seeing puppets and moving screens in the preserved venue connects performance with the physical work of keeping a rural stage usable. For a visitor, that relationship offers something different from watching a recording or a museum object. One announced performance cannot establish that the tradition’s future is secure.
