The Nippon Foundation Spogomi Federation reported on October 29 that 45 students collected 47.89 kilograms of litter at the completed October 4 Shiga competition in Kusatsu. Fifteen teams of three competed within a designated area for 60 minutes. This was a report of an earlier event, not a new participation invitation.
Kosen Catholic High School’s MIRIMO team won, collecting 13.99 kilograms and scoring 1,506 points. Eleven teams brought original collection tools. The tool award went to a Hieizan High School team that sewed discarded rice bags into tote bags. Spogomi scores the amount and type of litter, rather than weight alone.
Local perspective
The handmade equipment shows a practical connection between waste collection and making objects for repeated use. It also offers a local activity through which visitors can understand community care for public space. A single collection total does not establish a lasting fall in litter or marine pollution.
