Yamagata’s consumer affairs centre is urging people selling jewellery or precious metals at shops to compare offers and avoid rushed decisions. Its October 2026 notice says that receiving an appraisal does not oblige a customer to sell on the spot.

The centre explains that an appraisal and a purchase contract are separate steps. It warns that in-store buyback transactions fall outside the cooling-off scheme and that cancellation after an agreement is generally not possible simply because the seller changes their mind.

The notice recommends declining clearly if an offer is unacceptable, even when a shop presents a price as available only that day. People with concerns or disputes can call the consumer hotline, 188, for referral to a nearby consultation service.
