Fukui City has reported a three-day forestry work-experience programme held October 8–10. Its October 29 account says three people took part: two city residents and one person from outside the prefecture. The programme has already finished.

Participants received safety instruction before trying chainsaw work, timber collection and forestry machinery under experienced workers. The city says the instructors discussed difficult weather, insects and the hazards of the job as well as its appeal. The scheme is intended to help people consider forestry employment, but participation is not a professional qualification or evidence that the trainees entered the workforce.

Local perspective

Including the difficult parts of work makes this more informative than a scenic forest tour. It lets prospective workers compare interest in the outdoors with the skills and conditions of a local industry. The small group provides an example of that approach, not a basis for forecasting recruitment or solving labour shortages.
