Students at the agricultural college attached to Tohoku Professional University of Agriculture and Forestry will sell their own produce in Shinjo on November 3. The college’s October 26 announcement places the market within its annual school festival.
The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., but the produce market has a shorter window, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The venue is the college at 1366 Tsunozawa, Shinjo, Yamagata Prefecture. Planned goods include rice, fruit, vegetables, flowers and processed foods; the release warns that the selection may change with production conditions.
The market is part of practical education: students sell what they have produced and receive direct customer feedback to develop products, selling methods and communication skills. Graduation-project displays and student stalls are also planned for the festival.
Local perspective
The distinctive economic link is between production training and customer response. Because the students handle sales themselves, this market creates a setting in which agricultural output can be tested against shoppers’ questions and preferences, rather than ending at the farm gate. That follows from the college’s stated teaching method, not evidence that every product will find a larger market. Visitors also need to distinguish the one-hour sales window from the longer festival.
