Visitors to Iwami Ginzan in Oda, Shimane, can use a new mobile audio guide introduced at 8:30 a.m. on October 23. Voice actor Tomokazu Seki introduces places associated with silver production, including the Ryugenji mine tunnel and the Shimogawara smelting remains.
The guide draws on surviving picture scrolls depicting how ore was mined and turned into silver. It connects those production stages with locations visitors can walk around today. The prefectural education board created the guide and an accompanying map.
Users download an app to listen. A limited supply of maps is available on request to people who have downloaded it, at the Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center, tourist information centre and Iwami Ginzan Museum. The prefecture’s October 23 update presents the guide among projects leading up to 2027, the 500th anniversary of the mine’s discovery and the 20th anniversary of its World Heritage inscription.
